Gold Prospecting Tools Explained: What Each Tool Actually Does

Gold pans, classifiers, scoops, picks, crevice tools, detectors, pinpointers, buckets, and recovery surfaces—what each prospecting tool does and when it earns a place.

Start with the job you need to perform, then match the equipment to your method and terrain. This is practical field guidance—not a claim that one loadout fits every prospector.

Gold prospecting tools make more sense when they are organized by the job they perform. The pan is not competing with the scoop. The classifier is not a smaller sluice. A detector locates a target; it does not remove that target from the ground. Each tool belongs to a stage of the field workflow.

This guide explains the common tools prospectors use, what each one is actually for, and where overlap becomes unnecessary weight.

Gold pan

A gold pan concentrates material by taking advantage of differences in density while the operator controls water and material movement. It is useful for sampling, cleanup, and final concentration. Pan geometry can support the process, but technique remains central.

Look at controllability, riffle layout, wall angle, stiffness, grip, and how cleanly you can reach final concentrate. MR POCKET’s Riverbone Pan is in development and is being evaluated around controlled wash behavior rather than unverified recovery claims.

Classifier

A classifier separates material by size before it reaches the next recovery stage. Removing larger rocks makes a pan or recovery surface deal with a more consistent feed. Mesh size should match the material and downstream process.

Classification is one of the easiest ways to make a simple workflow more orderly because it prevents every tool downstream from processing material it does not need.

Hand scoop

A hand scoop moves and controls loose material during sampling and target recovery. In detector work it can help isolate material so the target can be rescanned, poured, and checked in smaller amounts.

Useful scoop features depend on the ground: bowl capacity, sidewall height, nose geometry, grip, drainage, and balance. The developing Riverbone Scoop is aimed at the controlled recovery stage rather than bulk excavation.

Pick or compact digging tool

A pick or digging tool opens compacted ground, breaks crust, works through roots or gravel, and creates access where a scoop cannot. The right size is determined by the material and how far you have to carry it.

For prospecting, control often matters as much as force. Oversized tools can move ground quickly but become awkward around a small target or narrow bedrock feature. TerraSense is MR POCKET’s developing modular approach to ground access.

Crevice tool

Crevice tools reach narrow cracks and bedrock features where larger tools cannot work effectively. Their job is controlled access and material removal, not general digging.

Thin geometry needs enough stiffness to work without becoming a disposable pry bar. A crevice tool should also let you capture loosened material instead of scattering the material you wanted to test.

Bucket

A bucket is more than a container when it becomes part of a prospecting workflow. It moves feed material, receives classified material, carries tools, stores concentrates, and can support stacked classifiers or other processing steps.

The weakness of a normal field loadout is that buckets, screens, pans, and accessories often behave like unrelated objects. The FieldCore System is being developed around a more deliberate classification-and-carry architecture.

Recovery mat or active recovery surface

Recovery surfaces are used where flowing material is being separated and retained. Their behavior depends on water flow, feed rate, material size, density, surface geometry, and cleanup method.

A surface that simply stores material is not automatically an efficient recovery surface. Hydraulic behavior has to be evaluated as a system. That is the development focus behind the Riverbone Mat.

Metal detector

A metal detector identifies electromagnetic responses from conductive targets in the ground. Detector technology, frequency, coil, settings, mineralization, target size, depth, and operator technique all affect the information the machine provides.

MR POCKET does not currently manufacture metal detectors. Detector selection should be based on the targets and ground you intend to search, not on the assumption that one machine is best everywhere.

Pinpointer

A pinpointer is a short-range locating tool used after the search area has already been narrowed. It can reduce unnecessary digging and help identify whether the target remains in the hole, sidewall, plug, or removed material.

It complements the detector; it does not replace it. In a well-organized kit, the pinpointer should be quick to access and secure when not in use.

Sand or shoreline scoop

A shoreline scoop combines digging, screening, and drainage. Wet and dry sand create high repeated loads, and a basket that holds too much water or sand becomes exhausting quickly.

Penetration, drainage, abrasion, socket strength, leverage, and packed size are key design concerns. MR POCKET’s Tidebone Scoop remains a development program for that environment.

Snuffer bottle and sample vial

Small recovery containers are used after concentration. A snuffer bottle can help collect small gold from a pan, while vials or other containers retain recovered samples. Labeling becomes important when material from multiple locations is being compared.

Do not let the final storage step become the least controlled part of the day. Losing track of where a sample came from destroys much of its usefulness.

Magnet

A magnet can remove or separate magnetic iron material from concentrates. It does not attract gold. Use it as a material-management tool, not as a gold-recovery shortcut.

Finds pouch and trash pouch

Detectorists need controlled storage for both recovered targets and trash. Removing trash from the field matters, and separating it from worthwhile finds prevents a pocket full of sharp metal from becoming its own problem.

Prospecting belt or carry system

A carry system organizes the tools you use repeatedly. The design questions are reach, retention, balance, interference, contamination, and whether the equipment can be returned without stopping to fight the attachment.

Field stand or gear-rest support

Frequently handled equipment needs somewhere to go when both hands are required. A useful field stand should deploy quickly, remain stable, avoid becoming a snag point, and disappear back into the workflow when the operator moves.

Which prospecting tools should you buy first?

Start with the tools required to complete your actual method. For basic panning, that may be a pan, classifier, scoop, sample storage, and basic field-safety equipment. For detector prospecting, the detector and recovery tools become central. For bedrock sampling, controlled ground access and crevice work may matter more.

The right sequence is not “buy everything.” It is “remove the biggest repeated friction first.”
